How To Tell If The Bypass Mode On Your Barbeque Regulator Is Ruining Your Grilling Experience

The regulator on your barbeque grill is designed to keep the propane flowing smoothly and evenly for better temperature control. It’s filled with safety features to prevent explosions and leaks, but sometimes the safety equipment malfunctions and interrupts your grilling experience. Check if your the bypass mode on your barbeque regulator is the cause of your flame issue by troubleshooting the device. Bypass Causes The bypass valve sits inside the regulator and works to detect a loss in pressure through the regulator hose. When it is switched on, you’ll notice symptoms like a low temperature inside the grill, a small flame that is yellow or light blue in color, or a grill that won’t ignite at all. Bypass mode is often triggered by a problem like A crack or pinhole in the hose connecting the propane tank to the grill. A burner on the grill left on, even just a little. Pressure problems on the tank or grill side of the regulator. Of course, damage to the regulator or bypass valve itself can also lead to the same problem. Checking for Leaks A soapy water test is the fastest way to find out if leaks in the regulator hose are holding you back from full heat. Use dish soap and spread the suds on the hose to see where gas is hissing out and creating a mass of soapy bubbles. You can also try this on the burners of the grill if you suspect a leak there, but remember to carefully rinse the soap off afterwards to keep it from gumming up the openings. Resetting the Parts When you suspect the bypass valve was tripped by accident, turn everything off from the gas at the tank to the grill burners. Disconnect the regulator and hoses and let everything sit for about 10 minutes so the pressure can stabilize throughout the barbeque system. Reconnect everything tightly, after replacing any parts showing signs of leaking, and try the ignition process again to see if you’ve reset the bypass mode.
